Food Heroes:
Jamie Oliver, Naked Chef
As food heroes go, Jamie Oliver - the Naked Chef - has to be one of the most controversial...
Jamie Oliver's cooking and presentational style has placed him somewhat between two camps - people either love him, or hate him. There seems to be no middle ground when the subject turns to "Jamie Oliver - that naked chef bloke".
First seen on TV presenting a dish during an episode of the River Cafe TV series he was confident and cocky in front of the camera. It was clear that here was a lad who could easily be the newest TV chef to hit our screens. And hit them he did!
Jamie Oliver for Minister of Food...
Bursting onto the cooking scene just a few years ago he took the food world by storm. Fame seemed to come very quickly, but his arrival has not always met with unconditional public approval. Whatever your view - and mine is very definitely in the "Jamie Oliver for Minister of Food" camp - there is absolutely no denying what a brilliant conjuror of flavour and texture he is.
Quite apart from his fluid common sense attitude to food and cooking, Jamie Oliver has given cookery back to a new group of foodies - a younger generation that was in grave danger of being swept away on a poisonous tide of TV dinners and fast food.
A great influence on the Male of the species...
So attractive and accessible does this "naked chef" make cookery that kids and adults from all walks of life and every age bracket have embraced his ethos totally.
But it is Jamie Oliver's infectious positivity that is such a strong influence, particularly on the male of the species. He's sent armies of men and boys into the kitchen.
And it is that, above all else, that makes him one of my food heroes!
